If you want a direct translation of the Upanishads, this is not the book for you.

This book approaches the Upanishads as an inquiry. It sits with the text, questions it, and examines what happens when their ideas are held against modern human experiences.

The Upanishads are among the oldest texts humans ever produced, written between 800 and 200 BCE by sages who were trying to answer one question: what are we, actually? This book takes eleven chapters from the original texts and works through them. Out loud, with objections, and with pushbacks.

The central argument running through all eleven chapters is this: most human suffering is caused by a specific error in how you see yourself. You see yourself as a separate, bounded entity that needs to acquire, protect, and hold onto things in order to be okay. That vision generates the anxiety, the possessiveness, the exhaustion of constantly managing how you appear, and most of your suffering. This book helps you work through that way of seeing.

And if the book has done its job well, the engagement with the Upanishads will not end when you finish reading the book. It will only begin when you start recognising these ideas inside your own life.
